Number Day provides a unique opportunity for children to have fun with maths and fundraise for the NSPCC, the leading children’s charity fighting to end child abuse.
The annual event sees free curriculum-based activities made available to schools and early years settings across the country to help make maths fun while raising funds for the charity.
As part of this year’s Number Day, which will take place on Friday 3 February, nurseries, pre-schools and childminders can access a range of resources including games and activities, such as Dress up for Digits, where children and educators wear an item of clothing with a number on it and donate to the NSPCC.
This year, veteran TV presenter and maths enthusiast Johnny Ball will be teaming up with the NSPCC to provide a series of videos which includes an array of activity ideas. The videos will be available on YouTube and social media.
Johnny Ball said the day is a great way for children to celebrate the joy of learning maths while supporting a great cause:
“Maths is an essential part of a child’s education as the ability to count, play with numbers and tackle puzzles, builds confidence and problem-solving thinking - all of which are essential lifelong skills. And most important of all, learning maths is fun.”
Raising money for a good cause
The funds raised from Number Day will go toward vital NSPCC services such as Childline and the charity’s Speak out Stay safe programme. The event has raised nearly £3 million since its launch in 2000.
