Robert Goodwill has left his role as minister for families and children, with responsibility for the early years, at the Department for Education.

 

The announcement is part of a wider cabinet reshuffle taking place, which saw education secretary .

 

Goodwill has been minister for families and children since June 2017 and has spent just six months in the role. His responsibilities included the early years, special educational needs and the pupil premium fund.

 

He told local newspaper, Scarborough News: "I was not shocked as these things happen and it looks like the Prime Minister is wanting to bring in some younger people." He added: "The Prime Minister called me in this morning and complimented me on the job I had done and she has my full support going forward."

 

Goodwill previously served as minister of state for transport and minister of state for immigration. He remains MP for Scarborough and Whitby.

 

A successor for the role of early years minister has yet to be named.
