Alliance supports functional skills campaign

The Alliance is pleased to be backing Save our Early Years, a cross-sector campaign calling for functional skills to be accepted as GCSE equivalents to enable EYE practitioners with these qualifications to be counted in ratios at Level 3.

We believe that it is vital to ensure that all early years practitioners have a good level of literacy and numeracy. However, given that the vast majority of early years employers agree that functional skills are a valid demonstration of competency in these areas, we feel that the government’s refusal to recognise functional skills qualifications as valid equivalents to GCSEs is extremely short-sighted.

At a time when the government is looking to significantly expand the provision of early years care and education, it is concerning that many excellent early years practitioners are being prevented from pursuing careers in the sector, simply because they do not meet a set of very narrow criteria.
