Supporting effective teaching and learning in the early years
18th June 2014
Observation, Assessment and Planning in the Early Years (Ref: A035) - Price for Alliance members: £13.95; Price for non-members: £21.95
Effective teaching and learning is underpinned by a reflective approach to observation, assessment and planning. The new Alliance publication Observation, Assessment and Planning in the Early Years (2014) aims to remind practitioners of the need to refer to important principles about learning and development, and to reflect upon how these in turn shape practice in their provision.
In line with the Early Years Foundation Stage (DfE 2014) and the Evaluation Schedule for Inspections of Registered Early Years Provision (аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¹ÙÍø¿ª½± 2013), the publication will take practitioners through the process of meaningful observation, assessment and planning which form the basis of effective teaching and learning. Our own experience, supported by wider research, tells us this is where truly effective practice is to be found and this is in fact reinforced by the EYFS with its emphasis on good quality teaching and learning based upon the unique child’s abilities and needs.
The publication encourages the planning process for teaching and learning, and explains why effective learning can only be achieved when the setting has a clearly defined methodology. The main focus of the book is to teach and encourage practitioners to have a reflective approach to their work, and use these skills to shape learning programmes based on an understanding of children’s unique development pathways.
Strong Foundations: Supporting the literacy and numeracy development of adults who work with children (Ref: A088) - Price for Alliance members: £9.55; Price for non-members: £13.95
One of the key aspects to providing effective teaching and learning is for practitioners to have competent literacy and numeracy skills. Strong Foundations (2014) is specifically designed to support the literacy and numeracy development of adults who work with children. The publication assists managers to recognise and support staff when literacy and numeracy skills are underdeveloped; or where English is a second language; or where a member of staff has a Specific Learning Difficulty (SpLD), such as dyslexia or dyscalculia.
The publication also recognises the importance of parents as the first educators, and so discusses ideas around how parents can improve their own literacy and numeracy skills through the development of fun activities, which allow them to expand their own knowledge alongside children.
Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage (2014) - with non-statutory supporting documentation (Ref: A009) Price for Alliance members: £7.00; Price for non-members: n/a
