Alliance comments on Centre for the Modern Family report
19th August 2014
Commenting on the Family Generations & Financial Pressures report released by the Centre for the Modern Family, Neil Leitch, chief executive of the Pre-school Learning Alliance, said:
“At a time when the government is committing to putting families ‘at the heart of government’, it’s clear that more need to be done to ease the financial pressures that many are currently facing.
“While the government has taken clear steps to support parents and carers in returning to work, it’s vital that those who choose to remain at home with their children - and our research shows that many parents would choose to do so, if given the choice - are not left behind. Similarly, the need for increased support for informal carers, particularly grandparents, should not be overlooked.
“For those parents who choose to use formal childcare, it is important that we develop a childcare system that is accessible, affordable and sustainable - but this is an aim that can be only achieved through greater government investment.
“These issues must be addressed as a matter of priority if the government is to ensure that children and families are adequately supported in the long term.”
